On April 19th, the high-level forum “Transcendence and Breakthrough: Construction of the Chinese Art Theory System and Academic Research” took place at the Music Hall of Nanyang Normal University. Professor Peng Jixiang, former Party Secretary and Vice Dean of Peking University School of Arts and President of the Chinese Art Theory Society, along with 13 other esteemed scholars in the field of art and culture, attended the forum. NYNU Secretary of the Discipline Inspection Commission and Supervisory Commissioner Liu Shouyong, Vice President Xie Haiquan, heads from the Social Science Office and the Graduate Office, participated in the opening ceremony of the forum as well as representatives of faculty and students. The opening ceremony was presided over by Liu Shouyong.

Xie Haiquan delivered the opening address, emphasizing that the forum centers on the construction of the theoretical system of art and the pressing issues of academic research, which will inject new vitality into the development and innovation of art theory in China and promote the advancement of art disciplines at our university.

Peng Jixiang delivered a speech, noting that the forum is guided by Xi Jinping’s cultural thought, “Upholding fundamental principles without sticking to old ways  and respecting tradition without restoring the ancient”, and it discussed the exploration of new horizons in Chinese art theory through cultural inheritance, thereby fostering the continuous development of the art theory system through such inheritance.

During the forum, experts and scholars exchanged perspectives on topics such as the construction of a Chinese art theory system centered on forging a strong sense of community for the Chinese nation, the study of Chinese art history and art historiography methodology, and the examination of Han Dynasty art and Han Dynasty art history.

At the closing ceremony, Xia Yanjing, Distinguished Professor from the School of Humanities of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and President of the Art History Professional Committee of the Chinese Art Theory Society, delivered a concluding address. Xie Haiquan also spoke, commending the forum highly. The forum proposed numerous forward-looking and innovative viewpoints, which not only broadened the academic horizons of faculty and students but also ignited their deep thinking and enthusiasm for exploration in art theory.

The forum was jointly organized by the Chinese Society of Art Theory and Nanyang Normal University, with co-organization by the Art History Committee of the Chinese Society of Art Theory, the School of Music, the School of Arts and Design, the School of Journalism and Communication of our university, and the Department of Art Studies of Harbin Conservatory of Music.
