On March 25, Professor Fang Baishan, the founding director of the Biochemical Engineering Research Institute at Xiamen University Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, was invited by the School of Life Science to deliver an academic lecture titled “Synthetic Biology and Its Applications”. The lecture was chaired by Niu Qiuhong, Dean of the School of Life Science, with participation from key faculty members and postgraduate students in related research fields.
During the lecture, Niu Qiuhong systematically introduced Professor Fang’s groundbreaking achievements in metabolic engineering and synthetic biology. Then Professor Fang elucidated the scientific essence and developmental trajectory of synthetic biology through his landmark research on artemisinic acid biosynthesis and artificial cell factory construction. By comparing technological development pathways between China and the United States, he highlighted China’s strategic transition from “following to leading” in this field, while sharing his team’s innovative experiences in key technologies of bio-manufacturing.
The interactive session fostered in-depth discussions on topics such as “biosynthetic pathway optimization” and “interdisciplinary innovation”. Professor Fang emphasized, “Synthetic biology provides a transformative paradigm for life sciences and chemical engineering, representing a crucial breakthrough point for developing new quality productive forces at our university.”
In recent years, NYNU has actively promoted interdisciplinary integration strategies, with the School of Life Science establishing distinctive strengths in microbial metabolic engineering. This high-level academic event not only expanded participants’ global perspectives but also strengthened inter-university research collaborations, injecting new momentum into innovative research in biomedicine. The university continues to dedicate itself to establishing high-quality academic exchange platforms that foster groundbreaking innovations in cutting-edge scientific and technological fields.
